Story
Lightning sends a lone samurai hurtling forward 140 years through time, landing on a film being made in modern Japan, where he is mistakenly cast as an extra in a period drama series.
KOSAKA Shinzaemon, a samurai (Japanese warrior), is on the verge of attacking the member of a rival clan. With blades drawn suddenly struck by lightning, Kosaka awakes to find himself not in Feudal Japan but on the set of a modern day samurai drama series production being filmed in Kyoto. With the help of a young assistant director who aspires to write her own period drama, an elderly couple from the nearby temple and a former stuntman, Kosaka slips easily into his new role as kirareyaku, a film extra who is always cut to death on screen. Yet as time goes by, Kosaka’s past begins to catch up with him. When the production of a new period drama is announced, Kosaka is suddenly face to face with YAMAGATA Hikokuro, a rival Kosaka had once sworn to defeat. As these former samurai are now thrust together, once again performing side by side, one final sword fight gives the two men the chance to reclaim their samurai spirit, setting them on a path towards redemption and a new hit film. The past meets the present in this light comedy directed by YASUDA Junichi, asking what it means to be a modern day samurai.
